The notification area displays information messages in balloons, is also displays the currently running applications. If you have inactive or hidden icons in the notification area, just click on the arrow pointing up to see the running applications.
If you want to disable the hidden icons feature to constantly see what you have running, right click anywhere in the empty space of the taskbar and select proprieties from the popup menu.
